EVERYDAY ICONS - ABU DHABI

NO. 0080 - THE DELMA MOTEL

Who’s heard of, or maybe visited, Delma Island?

For those unfamiliar with the location, Delma Island is a small island about 300km drive south-west of Abu Dhabi, and forms part of the Al Dhafra region. The island is reachable by a 40km ferry journey that takes approximately one hour, and runs twice daily.

I recently visited the island for the first time, and whilst there I came across a number of interesting buildings which I’ll be sharing as part of my Everyday Icons series.

The first is the Delma Motel. Originally set up by the Delma Cooperative Society, the perfectly square building is apparently the only hotel on the island (for now). Its four elevations are treated identically. The main building envelope is set back, with a shaded colonnade enclosing the building on both levels, which also creates lovely framed views outwards.

Architect and completion date unknown.
