EVERYDAY ICONS - ABU DHABI
NO. 0089 - ABU DHABI NATIONAL THEATRE
Completed in 1981, and thought to be the work of Iraqi architect Rifat Chadirji, the Abu Dhabi National Theatre is a huge concrete structure that blends a modernist design language with more traditional islamic design elements.
The theatre itself has a seating capacity of 1,200 and is still in use, having undergone renovation in recent years. When viewed in plan, the building is made up of a series of hexagonal volumes - one large forming the main auditorium, and serval smaller surrounding it on all sides.
Interestingly, the building is tucked away behind a row of residential towers, away from the main flow of traffic and pedestrians, and therefore seems to be less of a landmark than other buildings of the same era (e.g. The Cultural Foundation).
