EVERYDAY ICONS - ABU DHABI
NO. 0083 - FAMILY DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION
What stands out for me about this building is the detailing on the facade. What seems relatively simple from a distance reveals a nice lesson in proportion, relief and texture. The exposed aggregate of the modular panels contrasting with the smooth panel edges and the decorative screens to the windows, combined with the sculptural expression of the exterior staircases create a really interesting series of elevations. And the way the building sits partially concealed by lush landscaping adds further depth to its intriguing presence on the street.
It’s worth noting that the Family Development Foundation only takes up half of this building, the remainder being used as a school (The Al Dhabiania Private School), where the rhythm of the facade changes slightly to accommodate larger openings - presumably to allow light into the classrooms inside.
Architect and completion date unknown.
